New York Fashion Week has begun! You’ve probably heard about it at some point. Maybe you’ve attended. Maybe you’ve glued yourself to your phone or computer screen and read about or watched as much of it as you could find on the web. And maybe, although you love fashion, you’ve heard of NYFW but don’t really know what it is. If you’re in the last boat, you’ve come to the right place! We’ll give you a brief snapshot of the who, what, when, where and why of New York Fashion Week.
What is New York Fashion Week?
New York Fashion Week is one of the “Big 4” fashion weeks in the world along with those held in Milan, Paris, and London. It’s been happening for over 70 years! Basically, it’s a week or more built around events where designers show their new collections to buyers (aka, the people who place orders for stores, websites, etc.), media outlets and the public.
When is it?
This is a semi-annual event that happens in February and September every year.
Who is there?
Designers (of course), buyers, models, photographers, bloggers, socialites, etc. Basically, anyone who is anyone in the fashion industry is represented there. Therefore, it’s a BIG deal. If you want to know what’s in, who’s in, and what’s coming, tune in to New York Fashion Week! Most of the events are industry-only, but there are a select few events that are open to the public.
Where is it?
Several locations are used to house the many events that take place throughout the week. Locations change from year to year. This week, you’ll see many events taking place at Moynihan Station and Skylight Clarkson Square with other events scattered throughout other neighborhoods.
Why does New York Fashion Week exist?
The main goal of NYFW is for designers to show off their new lines for the next season (therefore, during the September NYFW, they’re showing designs for the Spring/Summer season of the next year). Obviously, with so many people from the fashion industry represented, NYFW is a great way for all sorts of businesses to get their name out there. You’ll see everyone from bloggers to models to news outlets talking about NYFW. Rumor has it that this year we’ll be seeing items that are actually available for Fall/Winter 2016 as well. Tune in and get excited about what’s happening now and what’s to come in the fashion world!
